In the 1790s, Benjamin Sarver immigrated to a little hamlet along the Little Buffalo Creek, promising to build the tiny village its first grist mill. It took Sarver – who was also the miller in Tarentum – less than a year to finish, despite having to also walk nine miles home after construction work each week. On one of these said walks, he was so exhausted and ravenous from his labors that he deviated from his path into a pioneer’s vegetable patch to satiate his hunger on raw pumpkins. In 1840, the town of Sarver was officially born.
Today, Sarver is an unincorporated community situated in Buffalo Township, one of the oldest settlements in Butler County. While the town has remained close to its milling roots, it has evolved to accommodate a diverse industrial landscape and to host a suburban aura alongside its original rural character.
An amalgamation of farmlands, residential properties, and local businesses operate alongside the Little Buffalo Creek, which continues to influence much of Sarver’s commercial endeavors and recreational lifestyles. Buffalo Creek Park and other nature reserves provide spaces for hiking and picnicking as well as opportunities for boating, fishing, surfing, and other water sports.
