Butler Winter Bucket List
While some may see snowflakes as a sign to hibernate, winter is the perfect time to explore and experience all that Butler County has to offer.
Moraine State Park is 16,725 acres, with 1,750 square feet of beach, 71 miles of trails and 42 miles of shoreline. What can you do with all of that space?
Hike 38 miles. Ride your horse for 20 miles. Bike seven miles. Mountain bike for six miles. Snowmobile for 26 miles. Have a picnic at one of the park’s 705 picnic tables. Keep your boat on the lake with 542 marina slips and 395 mooring spaces.
The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset, unless otherwise posted.
Park information, launch permits, cabin information and assistance can be obtained at the park office near the entrance to the South Shore. The office is open year-round, Monday through Friday, 8 AM-4 PM, and weekends during the summer.
Before visiting, check out the DCNR’s Rules and Regulations, calendar and download the park map.
Each year, over two-million people visit Moraine State Park, making it Butler County’s top attraction. The great addition to the Park has been Preston’s Pearl, an ADA accessible tour boat that offers a variety of cruises on Lake Arthur. Cruises run from Memorial Day Weekend through October, and more information can be found at Moraine Preservation Fund. Another unique way to enjoy the lake is through stand up paddleboarding lessons and guided eco tours with SurfSUP Adventures.
Swimming: Swimming is permitted at two beaches along the shores of Lake Arthur: Pleasant Valley Beach on the South Shore and Lakeview Beach on the North Shore. Pleasant Valley Beach has an accessible, paved path into the water, a sand volleyball court, and a playground. Lakeview Beach is a 656-foot sand beach. Both beaches are open daily from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day.
Fishing: There are abundant fishing opportunities with 42 miles of shoreline and numerous boat launches. McDanels Boat Launch has an ADA-accessible fishing pier. Bring your fishing license or plan to visit on select “Fish for Free” days. Find more fishing holes here!
Boating: Lake Arthur has nine public boat launches. Visitors can use the nearby boat rental for a variety of pontoon boat sizes and 15-foot tiller boats. Ice and fishing bait are available at the park’s Owlet Gift Shop.
Sailing: Sailing lessons and races are held throughout the summer. On any summer day you’ll see several multi-colored sails gliding across the lake.
Kayaking: A relaxing way to enjoy Lake Arthur and take in all the sights and sounds of the park. Rentals are available through Crescent Bay Boat Rentals.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding: SurfSUP is your guide to paddle boarding, with friendly instructors and classes for all experience levels. For more adventurous paddlers, try out the evening tour featuring LED-lit boards.
There are endless ways to experience the great outdoors and dive in to nature at Moraine State Park. Find friendly competition on the sand volleyball or disc-golf courses, enjoy a picnic at sunset, or explore the trails at a pace that feels right for you!
Hiking: Explore the 29.2 miles of trails winding through forests and grassy areas, along lake edges, and past wetlands. Trails of varying lengths and difficulty provide a variety of experiences for all adventurers. These include the Glacier Ridge Trail and a section of the North Country National Scenic Trail.
Wildlife-Watching: Frogs, newts, turtles, and white-tailed deer live along the edges of Lake Arthur. Look to the shorelines to spy great blue herons, green herons, and belted kingfishers. Flying above are osprey and bald eagles.
Biking: Seven miles of paved bike path are located between Davis Hollow and the Bike Rental Building in the northwest corner of the park. If mountain biking is more your speed, hit the trails near Davis Hollow Marina and enjoy the beauty of Moraine. Experienced riders will relish the challenge of these technical trails. A 6-mile loop trail for mountain bikes is on the North Shore. Trailheads are located off of Mt. Union Road and Alexander Ridge Road.
Camping: Have a relaxing and memorable getaway by staying at one of the 11 modern cabins that are available to rent year-round. Cabins sleep up to six.
Disc Golfing: Test your skills on the park’s 18-hole course. It features two par 5s, eight par 4s, eight challenging par 3s, and beautiful views. Hole #15’s view is outstanding!
Geocaching: Search 16051 on www.geocaching.com for locations. To place a cache, approval and a maintenance agreement is needed from the park office. GPS units can be checked out with valid ID if not in use for educational programming.
Horseback Riding: 20 miles of equestrian trails are in the southwest and east sides of the park. Riding is limited to designated trails and roadsides throughout the park.
Hunting: About 13,600 acres of Moraine State Park are open to hunting, trapping and the training of dogs during established seasons. Common game species are waterfowl, deer, turkey, grouse, bear, rabbit, pheasant and squirrel. No hunting areas are posted.
There's no better way to celebrate the beauty of winter at Moraine State Park than by attending the annual Winterfest celebration. Bring the whole family for a day of guided hikes, live music, vendors, demonstrations, activities, photo contest, soup contest, and more! If you can't make it to Winterfest, don't let that stop you from exploring the park all winter long.
Winterfest: A free event that is fun for all ages, inviting you to experience winter like never before!
Cross-Country Skiing: Pleasant Valley and Sunken Garden trails are groomed when snow conditions permit. The trails are blazed with yellow and pink and are suitable for all skill levels.
Ice Fishing: Conditions permitting, ice fishing is permitted from January 1 - March 15.
Sledding: A very popular sledding area is near the Pleasant View Picnic Area on the South Shore.
Snowmobiling: Conditions permitting, 26 miles of trails in the north and west portions of the park can be snowmobiled. There must be at least six inches of snow on the paved bike trail. Studded track snowmobiles are prohibited on the paved bike trail. Please refer to bulletin boards for additional rules and regulations for snowmobiling.
Snowshoeing: Snowshoeing is recommended at Jennings Environmental Education Center since cross-country ski trails are not groomed. However, snowshoeing is permitted at Moraine on designated hiking trails. Hikers must stay off to the side of groomed trails so as to not break up the set track.
