About the Accessible Hiking Trail
Every visitor deserves the opportunity to experience the peace, beauty, and restorative power of nature. Yet for many individuals with mobility challenges, families with strollers, veterans with disabilities, and older adults, much of Moraine State Park’s trail system remains inaccessible.
Recognizing this need, the staff of Moraine State Park approached the Moraine Preservation Fund with a vision: create an all-access hiking trail that would allow more people to experience the park’s natural beauty. Together, park staff and Moraine Preservation Fund volunteers carefully identified and marked the route for a one-mile loop designed to provide an enjoyable outdoor experience while protecting the surrounding environment
The proposed trail underwent environmental review to study the area’s trees, native vegetation, and geology, ensuring the project would preserve the natural resources that make Moraine so special. Over two dozen volunteers from the Butler Outdoor Club then donated several hours clearing a ten-foot-wide corridor, providing the foundation for the trail’s construction.
When completed, the trail will feature a durable, compacted limestone surface designed to provide greater accessibility for visitors of all abilities. The scenic loop will guide hikers through the beauty of Moraine State Park before arriving at a peaceful lakeside vista, creating a destination where everyone can pause, reflect, and enjoy the landscape.
More than just a trail, this project represents an investment in inclusion. It will expand opportunities for outdoor recreation, environmental education, and healthy living by making one of Pennsylvania’s premier state parks more welcoming to individuals with disabilities, seniors, families with young children, and anyone seeking a safe, accessible hiking experience.
